125 Years of Rowing Service
Ladies and Gentlemen, our interim Head of Rowing, Mr Carr, has some important announcements about several of our rowing coaches. What I know Mr Carr will not do, is say anything noteworthy about himself - so let me preface his remarks by introducing him as someone who has been coaching the sport of rowing for over 35 years and he received his Lifetime Achievement Award from Rowing Canada in 2020. 35 years is one heck of a long time but his passion for rowing and helping kids do their best has never faded. Please welcome and acknowledge Mr Brian Carr.
Every year at the Rowing Canada Annual General Meeting coaches from across the country are recognized by the organization for their longterm service to rowing in Canada. This year we have four coaches who have been recognized:
Some of you outside of Rogers House and the Boathouse might not have met or seen this man. Mr Stephen Ross, our Boathouse Manager and Senior Coach from St. Catharines, Ontario has completed 20 years of service to rowing in Canada.
Mr Ross started rowing in 1995 at Laura Secord Secondary School. He even has his rowing jacket that he says still fits. He started coaching high school and club in 2000 in St. Catharines and was also the Assistant Head Coach at Brock University. His accomplishments as a coach - has been in turning 100s of athletes not only into better rowers but also to develop skills to help them in life!
His crews have won multiple medals at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championships. The school, and especially the coaching staff here at Brentwood, are thrilled that Mr Ross has made Brentwood his new home away from home. Congratulations Mr.Ross
Jim Ganley is a family man, Privett House Man, Yearbook guru, English teacher, chicken farmer and rowing coach - with more than 25 years of service to Rowing Canada.
Mr. Ganley started rowing as a novice at Trent University in 1983. In 1985 he was in the varsity eight and was President of the club as it won the Ontario University Athletic Association Championship.
He began coaching in 1986 and soon became Head Coach at Trinity College School. He also served as Head Coach and president of the Peterborough Rowing Club. In 1993 he moved to British Columbia to serve as Head Coach at Shawnigan Lake School.
In 1999 he saw the light and joined the faculty at Brentwood College where he has coached Junior and Senior, boys and girls. Over the course of his career his crews have earned 15 medals at the national championships. Congratulations Mr. Ganley
Mr Rick Crawley is today receiving his 45 year service award from Rowing Canada.
He started rowing in the fall of 1969 at Washington (Seattle) and in Canada in the fall of 1971 at the Ottawa Rowing Club.
His 45+ years coaching resume is extensive - here are the highlights. His first coaching assignment was between 1972 and 74 where he started the women’s rowing program at the Ottawa Rowing Club. After a coaching stint at the Calgary Rowing Club, Mr Crawley moved to Victoria.
Between 1983 and 2018 he was the Head Coach of the UVic Varsity Women - 35 years. He led the UVIC Women’s team to 11 National Championships in 21 years of the event. Between 1988 and 1994 with Rowing Canada he was the Women’s National Team Assistant Coach.
He coached at the 1992 Olympics where the Canadian women won three gold medals.
He was on the Canadian coaching staff for the 1991 Pan Ams and the 1993-94 World Championships.
Over the past 98 years of Brentwood’s rowing program, we have produced 24 Olympians. Mr. Crawley, at UVIC, has coached 41 Olympians including current gold medalist Avalon Wasteneys and bronze medalist Caileigh Filmer. That in itself is a remarkable Hall of Fame achievement.
Finally, in 2019 he came out of retirement and is in his 3rd year at Brentwood, currently coaches our Senior Men’s team.
Mr Crawley - Thank you for your service to Canadian rowing and coming out of retirement three years ago and continuing your coaching here at Brentwood!
