Advice from the Head Prefect
Hey Brentwood,
First of all, could you all please join me in thanking the Orientation Assistants for the tremendous job they did over the past few days.
Also, a huge welcome back to all the returning students! I hope you all had an exciting summer and that you are ready for the year ahead of us.
As we take our first steps into this new school year I want you to think about all of the things that needed to happen in order for you to have the amazing chance of coming to this school. Be thankful for your parents, who gave up many things for you to be here; and as Charlie Crooks told us last year, they could’ve either sent you here or bought two million three hundred and fifty thousand Tim Bits.
Also realize that even if you are having a bad day, you are in privileged to be in this place with the people around you and be grateful for what you have. Knowing how incredibly lucky you are, make your time at the school worth it. Some of you only have one year left at the school, and others still have five years to go, but either way make sure that you take each opportunity to make a difference during your time here.
Now I am a huge fan of Harvey Specter from the show Suits, so I wanted to tell you my Top 4 Harvey Specter quotes that I think we can all relate to at the school.
1. “Get it through your head, first impressions last.” So take the time to introduce yourselves to your teachers and put in the extra effort especially during these first few days, because those are the images that your teachers will have of you for a long time.
2. “The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.” So whether you are out playing rugby, or in class, or debating put effort into what you are doing if you have a goal that you want to achieve because that is the only path to success.
3. “That’s the difference between you and me: you want to lose small, I want to win big.” This one inspires me to take risks and not be afraid to make mistakes. We should all try to go for the big win and not do a mediocre job. That being said, we can’t always win, which brings me to the last quote.
4. “Winners don’t make excuses.” There is nothing wrong with losing, as long as we remember to not make excuses. If the other side wins the game or you make a mistake, take responsibility for your actions and use those mistakes to improve for the next time.
I wish you all the best for this school year!
Thank you, Alejandro GG, Head Prefect, Ellis ‘17
