An Invitation From the Mad Hatter

17 July 2012

Having received a special invitation to partake in the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Khowhemun Elementary school, five SPARC members and Mrs. Felix jumped down the rabbit hole (or rode a bus) to this delightful occasion. When we arrived, the air was spirited and we were immediately acquainted with Alice!

Hustling down the hallway, eager to participate in whatever the school had in store for us, we readily jumped into costumes, and in turn, our roles. Tyler A ominously fit into the White Rabbit Costume, and he even had a clock! Sophia T transformed into the charming Mad Hatter while Noud H and Beatrice F adopted the role of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Next, we travelled back to the gymnasium, which now had the appearance of Wonderland. Cutout clocks and music notes danced along the walls while children ran from station to station. Tyler and Noud quickly glued themselves to a station where, with the assistance of the kids, they built towers out of cards. Beatrice played life-sized chess with a few children as well as helped kids make their own invitation cards with Sophia.

The colours burst with life as the sounds of laughter bounced off the walls. Mrs. Felix and I helped with the tea party by laying out pastries and refilling the teacups with juice. Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters briefly stopped by for a bite of each before immersing themselves once again into the organized chaos.

There were plenty of other activities such as mini golf and hat decorating; however, the one that drew the most attention from our volunteers was the miniature bouncearama. Too bad we exceeded the weight limit!

Khowhemun Elementary has a “new theme every year” said one of the organizers whose grandchild was attending the event. We’re so glad we were invited and would like to extend our thanks. Thanks also to Mrs. Felix for her yearlong devotion to SPARC and for finding this treasure of an event!
