AP Macroeconomics 12: Connecting Theory to Real-World Economics

What drives inflation? How do interest rates shape our lives? Why do recessions happen, and how can governments respond?

These are just a few of the questions tackled in AP Macroeconomics 12, a course that moves beyond the textbook to explore the real-world forces shaping global economies. Whether preparing for a career in business or simply trying to understand financial news, students gain essential knowledge of markets, monetary policy, and economic decision-making.

Taught by Ms Napier, the course challenges students to think critically about financial systems. “AP Macroeconomics is an excellent course because it develops critical thinking and decision-making skills while providing real-world applications of economic principles. Not only does it prepare students for college econ courses, and eventually careers in business, finance, and policy, but students learn the theories behind many of the current events we are now hearing about – tariffs, unemployment, inflation, interest rates, GDP, trade, fiscal and monetary policy.  This means they will be able to make well-informed, educated decisions in the future” Ms Napier explains.

So far, students have covered five of the six units: Scarcity, Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle, National Income and Price Determination, the Financial Sector, and Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies. While rigorous, these topics have strengthened students' analytical skills and deepened their understanding of economic principles. Much like the legendary economists who shaped the global landscape, Ms Napier guides us with an intellect that mirrors the depth and foresight of historical figures.

“AP Macro is extremely challenging, but it has pushed me beyond my comfort zone,” says Sahir T, Rogers ’26. “The fast pace and key concepts have helped me develop skills applicable to all aspects of my life and better understand the world.”

Luke O, Whittall ’25, echoes this sentiment: “AP Macro is one of my favourite courses because of its relevance to modern society. No matter our future careers, economics will always be useful.”

The course teaches us not just to learn, but to analyze; not just to memorize, but to understand; not just to pass, but to excel. Looking ahead, students will complete the final unit, Open Economy—International Trade and Finance, before reviewing for the AP exam. They will also undertake an independent economics research project to further refine their skills. To cap off the year, they will apply their knowledge in a Cocktail Party, where they will share and engage in economic, real-world discussions with school staff and administrators.

A heartfelt thank you to Ms Napier for her unwavering dedication and passion for teaching. Her commitment to challenging us has not only deepened our understanding of economics but also shaped us into more critical thinkers and informed individuals. Though the course is demanding, it has been one of the most rewarding academic experiences of my time at Brentwood. Ms Napier’s guidance has fueled my passion for business, and I am truly grateful for the impact she’s had on my learning.
