It is the busiest time of year for our many different athletics teams as they gear up for playoffs and seek to punch their tickets to Island, Provincial, and National championships.

On the water, our rowing crews were on full display as we hosted our 54th Brentwood International Regatta. This year, Mr. Calder decided to try something completely different and organized perfect weather for the entire weekend. For the first time in my fifteen years as Athletics Director, the sun was shining, and the water was flat from start to finish with not a single race being cancelled or delayed.

I realize just one year may not be a large enough sample size, but I am recommending that we try to do this again in 2027. In addition to the amazing weather, the fantastic entertainment, and the delicious food booths, our crews also made the School proud and brought home some impressive hardware. The Rowing team has since finished two more regattas, including Shawnigan Lake and the Windermere Cup in Seattle, WA. Our rowers are definitely peaking at the right time and are ready for the National Rowing Championships in St Catharines, June 3-7.

On the fields, our rugby teams are nearing the end of their seasons. The competition on the Island was fierce this year, particularly for our boys as they were required to play up in the 3A division due to their previous successes at the Provincial Championship. Neither the boys nor the girls qualified for Provincials this year, but both teams improved significantly and are excited for next season.

In soccer action, our Senior Girls were quietly one of the surprise success stories for this year. Despite having only three Grade 12s on the team, this group just kept finding ways to win games and completed their year by winning Bronze at the North Islands, then lost a very close game 1-0 to narrowly miss out on Bronze at the Island Championship. The team definitely exceeded expectations, and the future for this program looks very bright.

On the courts, our Brentwood Tennis team has had a terrific month. Brentwood hosted the boys and girls North Island and Island championships and played outstanding tennis in both events. The girls won Gold at North Islands and Silver at Islands and have qualified for the Provincials. The boys won Gold at both North Islands and Islands and have also qualified for Provincials. Both teams will be off to Burnaby immediately following the midterm break to compete for the Provincial Championship, May 19-22.

On the links, our Golf team is coming off a solid showing at the ISA Championship, gearing up for the Island Championship, and hoping to punch their ticket to Provincials happening in early June.

Finally, we will have a small group of students who competed at the North Island Track Meet. Ava H, Hudson V., and Bryan E. will be moving on to represent the School at the Islands in Victoria on May 20.

It is clearly an extremely busy time of year for our competitive teams, and we will update you on all their results in our final June edition of the Torch. In the meantime, please wish this amazing group of student-athletes well as they push for excellence while managing all of our end-of-year activities, including final exams!
