Behind the Gold: Operating the Award’s Tent at Regatta
The silent success of the team behind the trophy table was made possible by two groups of hardworking students and diligent teachers working together to share the gold at the 54th Brentwood Regatta. The heart of the Regatta lies within the awards tent, where the athletes, volunteers, coaches, and adoring fans and family gathered to celebrate the victors. While the awards tent seems like a place where people hand out medals in their pristine Number 1s, it is actually a hub of organisation, teamwork, and connection.
Within the tent, there were many roles allocated to make sure that everything ran smoothly. The two shift leaders sat patiently, awaiting the official results to communicate to the gold runner, gold and trophy assistants, and the silver and bronze attendants. The jobs varied in focus, with some in the field of getting results and others responsible for handing out the awards. This carefully created system would have been nothing without the shared effort of everyone. The communication from the members of the team ensured that every gold, silver, and bronze medal was awarded with a smile and class. Each job may seem small on its own, but together they form a framework that ensures every competitor is recognised for their hard work. Ms Balbiani, the mastermind genius behind all this, said, "Each year, I watch leaders emerge within the awards tent. Once they master the logistics, they lead the entire process independently. I am merely there to provide support."
Teamwork was essential to this fast-paced environment. The tent relied on clear communication and, most importantly, cooperation, especially when we had to adapt to unscheduled changes or delays quickly. Jayden R, Ellis ’28 said, “Success depended on one another, and we were lucky enough to work so well as a team.” Whether it was double-checking results, giving announcements, or the sense of collaboration and Brentwood pride, these factors contributed to the positive working environment. As Mr Skardal announced each school's place, the trophies and medals were handed out, and every member had a small sigh of relief for a brief moment, until the next race's results quickly showed up again.
Beyond the organisation and teamwork, the awards tent offered a unique opportunity to meet new people and share experiences. People from different schools and backgrounds all came together at the tent, and were celebrated for their hard work. Jai K, Mackenzie ‘28 said, “I loved having the opportunity to share such a sweet moment with these hardworking athletes.” The trophies, which were meticulously labelled, also carry a deep Brentwood history. Most trophies were named after alumni of the school, and each trophy carried a different story or rowing tradition. In many ways, the tent becomes a place where history and passion for the sport are shared across generations. "I love seeing students transition into leaders at the awards tent. During the regatta, they are the ones managing the process; we are simply there to support them." Ms Balbiani said.
The awards tent is more than a functional place at the Regatta; it is the heart of celebration, teamwork, and connection. Through the hard work and dedication of both teachers and students, spirits were constantly high.
I would like to thank both the Saturday and Sunday crews for working so hard and making this not feel like a job, but a wonderful community. Thank you to Mr Skardal, Mr Landsdowne, Ms Checkley, and Mr Cowie for being the kindest job bosses. And of course, the biggest thank you of all goes to the fabulous Ms Balbiani. Thank you for organising and setting up the system of this well-oiled machine. We couldn't have done it without you!
