Dance 2013-2014
From the moment students arrived to their first dance class last September, the level of passion for this art was evident. As new and returning students mingled and got to know one another, dance class became a place of sharing each individual’s artistic mind. Ms. Blake’s and Ms. Jen’s contagious love for dance was spread among all classes.
The Grade 12s set the stage for the anticipated “War and Peace” themed Evening of Dance with a piece about the gateway into heaven at the Concert for a Winter’s Eve. As Ms. Blake and Ms. Jen worked together to share their passion for the art of movement with all of us, we soon had the entire dance program working to create a memorable Evening of Dance comprised of more than 50% of the students’ own choreography. Student choreography is encouraged, as the Brentwood Dance Program emphasizes artistic ability and growth. Though many were battling “choreographer’s block”, everyone pulled through, and with a great deal of hard work and dedication, the Evening of Dance successfully showcased each and every dancer.
After the Evening of Dance was over, all three classes were on the road and ready to perform at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival where they danced impressively receiving a great response. The advanced class was even asked to perform at the Highlights Concert. Performing for the last time together, a group of five competed in the annual Core Dance Competition in Nanaimo. With great responses from both the audience and the adjudicator, we were awarded the first place prize. Finally, to end the year on a high note, the entire advanced class performed one last time at the Highlights Concert in Victoria.
I couldn’t have asked for a more incredible final year to my Brentwood dance career. Thank you Ms. Blake, Ms. Jen, and to all the dancers for making this year so memorable!
