Ellis Goes All In: Casino Night Brings the House to Life

As the lights dimmed and the sound of chips clinking filled the halls of Ellis House, students from across campus stepped into a world of cards, chance, and camaraderie. Ellis Open House returned this term with a casino-themed twist, transforming the boarding house into a lively hub where blackjack tables, roulette wheels, and mystery prize stations brought the spirit of Las Vegas and Monaco to Brentwood.

Designed as a chance for the wider school community to experience Ellis House life, the evening welcomed students from every house to step inside, try their luck, and take part in the festivities. From seasoned card players carefully calculating their next move to first timers spinning the roulette wheel with hopeful anticipation, every corner of the house buzzed with energy.

Guests earned chips as they played their way through the games, with one ultimate goal in mind: reaching one million. Those lucky or skilled enough to hit the milestone were granted entry into the night’s most exclusive destination - the High Rollers Room. Inside the VIP enclave, the stakes were higher, the crowd was tighter, and the atmosphere was even more electric.

“Although extremely busy with almost 25 people in a room at once at its peak, I wouldn’t have changed it any other way,” mentioned High Rollers Room dealer Johnno Forsyth, Ellis ‘26.

Behind the scenes, the Ellis boys worked just as hard to make sure the night ran smoothly. Pizza boxes were stacked and arranged throughout the house to keep guests fueled between games, while others carefully managed the flow of chips and handled cash to keep the event organized. Dealers rotated between tables, pit bosses helped explain the rules to newcomers, and hosts worked quietly in the background to keep everything running without a hitch.

Security guard Shiv D, Ellis ‘27, reflected on how the event went beyond just the games: “I love how it brought the whole school community together, and everyone went along with the theme so well,” he shared.

For Ellis Houseparent Mr Mark Wismer, the night captured exactly what makes events like this special. “Ellis Open is the best! Always super cool to see all the boys bond.”

By the end of the evening, the chips had been counted, the final roulette spins had landed, and the halls of Ellis slowly returned to their usual rhythm, but the laughter, friendly competition, and shared moments left behind something more lasting. The event showcased the pride, effort, and energy that define Ellis House.

As my time in Ellis begins to draw to a close, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the Ellis boys who helped make the night possible. Your hard work, creativity, and positive energy turned this night into something truly special. Events like this are what make Ellis feel like home, and they are the moments I know I will miss most. As our time in the house is reaching its end, my fellow 12s and I are incredibly grateful for memories like these and for the brotherhood that made them possible.

Ellis House, Best House.
