EXtenDAYS Sea Kayaking

The theme for Brentwood's Grade 10 is "exploration." There are a lot of learning activities that embody this theme throughout the year, but one of the most representative events is EXtenDAYS, held every spring, involving all Grade 10 students. In 2025, EXtenDAYS offered seven half-day activities, eight full-day, and five overnight options.

Mr. Norman, math teacher and the coach of Outdoor Pursuits, described EXtenDAYS as “providing “all Grade 10 students with a diverse choice of outdoor activities which highlight the incredible beauty of Southern Vancouver Island while also providing challenges which will help them build a framework to support their wellness.” Students choose what they really want to do, not what their friends choose.

I participated in the sea kayaking overnight trip from May 4th to 6th. I had never kayaked before, but I saw EXtenDAYS as the perfect opportunity to step out of my comfort zone.

We arrived at the campsite after 10km of paddling over 3 hours. There, we cooked our meals, set up tents, and slept in sleeping bags - all new experiences for me.

Although I knew the people in my group, I had never really spoken to them. Spending time in nature helped us grow closer. Luella J, Mackenzie ‘27 shared that “It was tough, but that’s what brought us to bond!”

EXtenDAYS was a time for all Grade 10 students to meet new people, take on new challenges, and discover a new side of themselves. It was truly an experience worthy of "exploration."
