From Tip-off to Top Ten: The Junior Boys Basketball Journey

The Brentwood Junior Boys basketball season, which tipped off in November, concluded last month with a strong showing on the provincial stage. It was a campaign defined by consistent development, characterized by several peaks and the inevitable challenges of a long winter season.

The team established an early rhythm at the Christmas tip-off at Spectrum. Brentwood asserted dominance over several Vancouver Island schools, cruising through the bracket to secure the gold medal. As Chris P, Privett ‘28 noted, “We really found our rhythm early on at Spectrum, and winning that gold medal set the tone for what we knew we could achieve as a group.”

Upon returning in January, the squad maintained their focus during league play. While most games saw us controlling the floor, we were tested by local rivals Cowichan Secondary, where we demonstrated the composure needed to maintain an undefeated league record.

Seeking higher-level competition, we travelled to the Holy Cross Crusaders Tournament, featuring several top 10 schools. Entering with a mix of anticipation and nerves, we proved we belonged amongst the elite. Josh V, Privett ‘29, shared, “Competing against the top teams at Holy Cross showed us exactly where we stood and gave us the confidence we needed heading into the post-season.”

We made our way through a difficult set of teams to reach the finals against the host team, Holy Cross. Although we ended up losing, we still managed to obtain silver, and the experience confirmed our status as provincial contenders.

The post-season began with a clear objective: qualifying for the BC Provincial Championships. After winning Mid-Islands, we moved on to the island Championships at Vanier. Facing top-tier programs like NDSS and Lambrick Park, we reached the finals against Isfeld. A victory earned us the Island title and the seventh seed for the provincial tournament.

At Provincials, we faced the highest level of competition in BC. After winning our opening two games, the team suffered tough losses to Burnaby South and Vancouver Technical. However, we rallied together for our final game as a team.

Cormac W, Ellis ‘28 summarized the journey: “Ending the season with a win at Provincials meant a lot; it showed our resilience and how far we’ve come as a team since November.”

Finishing seventh in BC, the season was a definitive success. The future of Brentwood basketball remains bright. We’d like to thank our coaches, Mr Pasquale & Mr Shaw for their expertise and dedication all season long.
