Health Center Solar: ‘Looking Good On You’

Sustainable energy has taken a key role in Brentwood’s construction of the brand-new Health Center this month. The high-efficiency solar panels on the roof of the impressive new building will serve as a stepping stone to a greener campus. “We’ve been watching solar technology evolve over the years, waiting for the right moment when it made clear financial sense. For the new Health Center, that time has arrived,” shares Mr Scott Murray, Project Manager of Brentwood Facilities. This initiative is a testament to Brentwood’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, along with the forward-thinking of the Board of Governors and the Facilities team.

With a capacity of 25.5kW, the system of solar panels will aim to significantly offset the building's energy consumption, making a critical decrease in Brentwood's carbon footprint. They should produce 64% of the buildings' electrical needs. While the total project cost reached $64,766, it was made more accessible thanks to a $25,000 BC Hydro Rebate. This brought the net cost down to $39,766, with an estimated payback period of 9.4 years. After that, the panels will provide free and sustainable electricity for decades to come, resulting in an estimated $149,000 savings in the cost for electricity.

“The decision to integrate solar technology into this project was driven by a significantly improved Return on Investment (ROI), which is now projected at less than ten years. This shift is fueled by a "perfect storm" of factors: more aggressive incentives from BC Hydro, major technological leaps, and the fact that solar hardware is exponentially cheaper to produce and install than it was a decade ago. Essentially, the economic viability has finally caught up with the environmental benefits. This installation serves as a strategic starting point, so stay tuned for potentially larger-scale renewable energy projects expanding across campus in the near future,” stated Mr. Dave Crisp, Brentwood Facilities Manager.

For years, Brentwood has prided itself on being an energy-efficient school. From the innovative ocean-loop cooling and heating systems, to the sustainable decisions made by Food Services, to student-led initiatives like the Brentwood Environmental Action Team (BEAT), to getting a sleep-in when there is no trash on the ground (Thanks Mr Chalmers) the Brentwood community is working hard to leave the earth better than we found it. “Solar panels are a great source of renewable energy, and I think that continuing to implement sustainable habits whenever we can on our campus is essential in being as sustainable as we can. Every little bit counts, while currently only two of our buildings have them, they are a great step in a sustainable direction,” shares Layla R, Mack ‘26, Captain of BEAT.

BEAT Sponsor Mr Ganley added, “The 2023 IPCC report stated with high confidence that 'The choices and actions implemented in this decade will have impacts now and for thousands of years,' so I'm really glad that Brentwood has taken this step, and look forward to a wave of solar panels on Brentwood roofs very soon.”

A huge thank you goes out to all of our school’s leaders for their ideas, financial support, and commitment to Brentwood’s increasingly sustainable future.
