Hoop Side Heroes: The Scout Team’s Impact
This year's Senior Girls’ Basketball team has defied all odds. After a slow start to their season after losing multiple seniors last year, lingering injuries, and multisport athletes arriving after the season started, this team has faced numerous challenges. Yet, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, they quickly grew from these early struggles, finding strength in their unity and determination.
Another key factor in their success is the Scout Team.
This team - made up of 6 guys - joins the Senior Girls at each of their practices acting as both opponents and allies. Their role delves deeper than simply running through drills - they mimic the style and strategies of the opposing teams, giving the girls a chance to face any scenario that might unfold on game day. Point guard Kionah W, Allard ‘27 shares: “The scout team has really helped us improve not only our skills, but our ability to play under pressure.” Their physicality and unpredictable plays force the girls to adapt quickly, think strategically, and refine their execution while under pressure.
What makes their contribution even more impressive is that they volunteer their time to support the team, all while earning volunteer hours. This dual benefit - contributing to the success of the team while building their own resumes - is a win-win situation, both on paper and on the court!
The team has had many successes this year since training against the scout team. In January, they competed at the Southridge Tournament in Surrey where they faced some tough competition. They rose to the challenge and beat the 7th-ranked AA home team, Southridge, in a nail-biting game. Recently, they competed at the RCMP tournament held at Belmont in Victoria where they played many hard-fought games. Impressively, they knocked off the #1 Single A team in the province, PCS. However, it did not come easyily as they battled through double overtime to come out with a 89-83 win. Ms Napier, Head Coach, says that she was “super proud of everyone for battling through that tough game.”
The Brentwood team, which also won North Islands and placed third at Islands - qualified for Provincials as the #11 seed. They will face #6 Britannia on Wednesday, February 26 at 3:00 at the Langley Events Centre.
They’re proving that just like the phoenix, with the help of the Scout Team, they will endure, overcome, and soar to new heights!
