Interhouse Track and Field
On Saturday, June 11th, in the tradition of ancient Greek athletic competitions, Brentwood hosted its annual interhouse track and field meet, with everyone arriving eager to begin the battle for victory and eternal glory.
Green, Orange, Blue and Red burst forth and the track was laid out in preparation for this spirited competition. Cheers rose and sliced through casual chatter from all sides of the field as the four houses Ellis, Rogers, Privett and Whittall worked up their excitement. Throughout the day the crowd stayed consistently large and supportive while the athletes burned footprints in the grass with their determination.
Four athletes from each house - both girls and boys - participated in each event. Students exhibited their athletic aptitude from the discus throw to the 800 meter run straight through to the 4 x 400 meter relay race. Long jumpers and triple jumpers showed off their aerobatics in the sand pits.
Runners lined up at the starting point and ran through short cardio drills before
crouching down, checking their laces and waiting for the crucial sound of the starting gun. In that instant, the silence before the shot was deafening. It rang in your ears, triggering the heart to race at a sensational pace. Then it came, that eerie release of noise, like a crack of a whip. Their bodies hadn?t registered it yet, but their minds told them to ?Go! Go! And go fast!”
Along with the natural, friendly rivalry that is always present, there was cooperation and encouragement from team to team. Nearing the end of this event, relay teams began to gather together and practice. After the successful endings that the relays brought, everyone congregated for the final even, the tug of war. One student from each grade in their house represented their interhouse as they stepped up and challenged another house to a battle of strength and leverage.
Interhouse track and field was an undeniable success thanks to the outstanding attitude that students brought to the sports field as well as the teachers who volunteered their time to help make this event so enjoyable and memorable.
