Last Tuesday, a clutch of Brentwood students left their second block English, Math, Biology, or Physics class to attend a new type of class in Victoria. They hopped onto a bus and went to the University of Victoria. We were going to learn about Python http://www.python.org. No, not the snake, the programming language. Upon arriving we walked into the classroom to see rows of computers waiting to be used. Sitting down, we were introduced to a terminal, an interpreter that can understand commands other than 100100111001. We were shown basic commands and how to draw in a program called “Turtle” (there was an animal theme). After experimenting with the language, including drawing the Olympic rings, class was over and we went to lunch. After lunch we attended a lecture about the Mountain Legacy Project (http://mountainlegacy.ca), which, through repeat photography and computer science, is monitoring changes in ecology and geology in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. After being amazed by the stunning photographs and thanking our professors, we loaded back on the bus and headed home. Joe K, Whittall ‘16
