Java Hut 2011

2 March 2011

It is perhaps one of the most anticipated nights of the Brentwood year. It is a chance for teachers and students alike to present their talents to the community in a relaxed setting. The annual Java Hut Café provides a unique atmosphere for students to let loose, whether it be with costumes or music choices, to finally take the risk to get up on stage in front of the Brentwood community.

This year, the anticipation began with the debut of Brentwood’s new superstar Annie B at Thursday’s assembly. Her awe-inspiring performance had the entire school on their feet singing her praises, and excited for what this year’s performances would bring.

This was the first year that Java Hut was held in the old dining hall rather than the auditorium. The new venue provided a much more spacious environment. Hosted by Rachel H and Max E, the event started at 7:30, though students came in droves and lined up to get good seats much earlier. Opening with Kevin K’s magic act and closing with an original rap by Harry B and Mitch R, the night presented the most diverse and unique range of performances I have yet seen.

There was everything from an upbeat belly-dancing act by Nisan A and Laura G to an encore act of John C’s Lord of the Rings in 60 seconds. The Brentwood rock bands “The Best Dressed” and “Words of Wisdom” also took the stage, clearly enjoying the opportunity to perform outside the more formal Bunch Theater. The faculty band “Staff Infection” did not disappoint, performing in true rock star fashion.

Java Hut has always been an event for families, as members of the Brentwood staff are often performers. This year, even the newest member of the Brentwood family, baby Coen O, made an appearance along with his parents and a collaborative group of students singing “Wagon Wheel”. Annie B brought the house down once again with yet another brilliant original composition.

A huge thanks to the SAC members and tech crew who helped to make this event possible, and especially Morgan L who coordinated the whole thing. Congratulations to all performers, you made this night fantastic!
