Junior A Girls Field Hockey
In Robert Browning's famous dramatic monologue "My Last Duchess" the Duke of Ferrara flaunts his wealth and power with a statue of Neptune, taming a seahorse, cast in bronze. Could there be a better symbol of the glittering success that was the Junior Girl’s Field Hockey season than bronze domination? In exciting sudden death shoot-out finishes, the girls won Bronze medals at both the ISA tournament and the Island championships. Not gold, true, but all that glitters is not gold.
Neptune is, of course, the god of the sea, and we cannot ignore the nautical theme of this year's campaign. We played in storms; we played on flooded fields. The only time we did not play was when the local water-based turf was closed, paradoxically, because of rain. Even when the whistle blew, we kept hydrating.
With only three players returning from last year’s team, this really was a building year for the junior program. Nevertheless, with hard work and a level of enthusiasm that was infectious, the team developed into an effective, skillful crew on the field. This bodes well for both the junior and senior teams next year.
I would like to thank all of the players, especially our fearless goalie Brianne P, Mackenzie ‘17 and the veterans Holly C no hyphen H Mackenzie ’17 and Tasmin W, Mackenzie ‘17 for helping to make this a successful and memorable season of field hockey.
This year's team tamed many a sea horse and rode to victory at battle’s end. Of that I am very proud.
