Junior Girls Basketball 1
This was a historic year. Many of these devoted girls met Wednesdays through the fall to build their skills. Once the season began in November, we were ready to go, leaping into tournaments. We were deep enough to field two teams, one in the Victoria Tip-off losing only one game to top-ranked Belmont, and another to VIU, where we were undefeated. We also entered two teams in the Mid-Island league, where both teams went undefeated, winning the banner.
After winter break, we returned to host the Ogilvie Tournament, where our two teams tied and collectively won the trophy. Although a number of players were dealing with injuries, by mid-January, the team was in peak form and ended up defeating PCS, Claremont, and Alberni to win the PTQ for our first ever berth to provincials. The team then ventured to the ISAs where we earned silver, losing only to SMUS, who ultimately finished #2 in BC.
We then ventured to Provincials where we faced a difficult first round matchup, losing to #15 3A College Heights. The squad regrouped and came back with a convincing 32 point win over 3A Duchess Park. We faced another 3A, Robert Bateman, in our most exciting game of the tournament. Down by three with a minute left, Jensa NG hit a three to tie, and then we made a steal & some free throws to win 52-55, moving us to the finals. After such an exciting game, we weren’t sure if we could muster the energy as we faced 4A Riverside, but his group continued to play gritty and pulled away with another convincing victory. With a tournament record of 3-1, the future looks bright.
The girls put so much effort and spirit not only into their games, but into each practice. We devoted time over break and every Wednesday night to better our game. We welcomed new additions to the team and ultimately ended the season as sisters on & off the court. So much has been learned this season & memories have been made together. Thank you girls and thank you to Ms Napier, Manton, & Bakker for a great season.
