March Madness in Brentwood Girls' Rugby
Last Thursday the BCS Girl’s Rugby team began preparing for their first 15s game of the year. We were unsure of what to expect of the Eagle View team from the Mainland. Not knowing their strengths, we focused on keeping the mentality of hard work no matter the opposition. Our quote of the day from Coach Felix was “The best team is the one you play on the day” from the New Zealand All Blacks.
The 4pm game began with an experienced line of backs, including new and extremely strong players Allie W and Coco U. The forward pack consisted of many experienced players and welcomed new players such as Flavie B, Deborah C, Tessa M, and Delaney M.
The game began with many new players beginning to understand the concept of tackling, hard running and protecting the ball in contact. With each phase of play the players became more organized and determined to maintain their energy level and our team’s fitness showed throughout the game. Coco and Denise R scored several tries and Anita P demonstrated her support and on-field fitness. The game was a clear win for Brentwood and both teams were very supportive of one another on and off the field.
On March 31st, Brentwood welcomed Shawnigan Lake’s Girl’s rugby team for their first game of the season. This rivalry is historic and important which leads to a consistently competitive and exciting game. The game was, as always, extremely fierce.
The Brentwood forward pack consisted of many skilled new players such as Romy G, who played every second of the game exceptionally well, and Flavie B who played an unfamiliar position with flair. In the back line, Mckenna H’s passes and agility allowed for quick and perfectly-executed passes to the wings, Allie W & Shannyn O, and Denise R who stepped the opposition out wide and also made important, try-stopping tackles.
The game allowed for a high level of high school rugby and both teams undoubtedly got better throughout the game. It was very close with the extremely skilled Shawinigan forward pack crashing many balls up into the new Brentwood forward pack. The final score, due to Avi S and Mckenna H’s amazing goal kicks, was Brentwood 24, Shawnigan 20.
Both games allowed for our girls to develop immensely and we look forward to another game this afternoon against Port Alberni. We are already excited to begin the 7s and 15s season that is fast approaching.
