National Sweater Day: Cozy Up for the Planet!

26 February 2026
Fiona C

It is the day before Midterm break, and what better way to celebrate than with National Sweater Day during school! This campaign has been initiated by WWF Canada and has been held annually on the first Thursday of February since 2010. The goal of National Sweater Day is simple: raise awareness about how our choices affect energy use. By turning down the heat in our school buildings and putting on comfy sweaters, we can stay warm while saving energy and cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.

During a BEAT meeting, Ms. Mack helped lead National Sweater Day and gave members of the club a chance to think about how we as a school have a responsibility to reduce our energy use and raise more awareness about climate change. In the past, we have measured our energy consumption through water use and electricity use in our boarding houses, but this initiative was different because it influenced our time during the academic morning. Our current BEAT Captain, Layla R, Mack ‘26, reflects, “It was so great to see the school participate in an initiative that shows our commitment to raising awareness about our Earth.”

As a school, we are aware of the simple ways to save energy as frequently as possible, such as turning off lights when unused, closing our windows in dorm rooms, or reducing water use when showering. National Sweater Day is a unique way to raise awareness about these small but important actions, reminding us that even cozy traditions can inspire change for our planet. Ms Mack mentions, “Brentwood successfully lowered energy consumption in our academic buildings, promoted sustainability practices through energy conservation, and contributed to a greener future, joining schools across the nation in taking action”.

Classrooms were full of colourful sweaters: fuzzy, knitted, striped, and even a few with fun winter patterns. It was the perfect setting to learn something new while still enjoying the relaxed and exciting atmosphere before break. Nimret S, Mack ‘26, shares her experience: “What made this initiative special was how it was super fun combined with purpose!”

A big thank you to all of the students who participated in National Sweater Day, Ms Mack, and BEAT for contributing to a successful initiative! We hope that this experience will become an annual tradition at our school, one that continues to bring the community together while reminding us about how small actions can lead to a big difference for our planet.
