New Beginnings for the Senior A Girls Volleyball Team
It was a chilly morning on September 13th as the Senior A Girls Volleyball team gathered at Crooks Hall to embark on their first adventure as a new team. Our destination? None other than the UBC invitational tournament: our season opener.
As the first Brentwood team to leave campus to compete with other teams across the province, we knew we wanted to set a competitive tone for Brentwood Athletics. Athletic Prefect, Ruby M, Allard ‘25 stated: “We are pumped to be the team that kicks off the competitive season this year”.
Our first matchup was against a strong and dynamic Earl Marriot. This was an extremely intense match with both teams fighting for each point. We ended up tying the match 25-16, 16-25. Our next two games presented some struggles for our team. Though we battled back against two well-rounded squads - South Delta Secondary School and Magrath School - we fell short in both matches.
Though we were disappointed in our play on day one, day two proved to be more successful for our newly-formed team. We started the day with a two-set win against an experienced Elgin Park School. The team played great defence and improved our areas of weakness from the day prior. Our second match was a tough one versus Lord Byng Secondary. Both teams played some great volleyball, but in the end, we took the match 25-19, 25-21.
Our final match, versus Island rival NDSS (Nanaimo District Secondary School), was a three-set thriller. Both teams were out to win the White division and our team put up a great fight. Although we took a set off of NDSS, they battled back in the third and won our division. Basma J, Allard ‘25, said: “I am really happy with how we battled as a team through our ups and downs”.
This was a phenomenal first look at how our season will play out and I am so excited to be a part of such a talented team. This tournament proved to be an experience that highlighted how much potential our team has, and I look forward to playing with these girls for the rest of the season.
