Next Man Up - Brentwood Golf Prepares for ISAs
As the Brentwood golf team attended the ISA tournament in Vancouver on May 7th, there was a distinct "next man up” energy roaming around the practice greens. After a solid performance at the Olympic View Police Tournament, the team is looking to turn those individual successes into a major team push.
Reflecting on the team's recent performance from the coaches' cart, Coach Allen highlighted that the core of their success isn't in the scores, but in the etiquette. “Everyone played with good humour and sportsmanship,” Allen noted, pointing to personal bests like a standout 79 by Ryder and an impressive 39 on the back nine by Yoshino. However, he's quick to remind the squad that there is work to be done. The team's focus leading up to the Vancouver tournament is the short game. “From 150 yards in, that's where you score,” Coach Allen says, reminding the players to take their time on the greens and really read the breaks.
This technical focus is especially important now, as the roster sees some fresh faces. With two top seeds having to sit out due to AP exams, the tee opened for newer players like rookie Caeden S. For Caeden, it's more than just a debut at this tournament; it's a comeback. After a very long recovery from an injury, he hasn't been able to be in the competitive environment for any Brentwood team until getting the nod from Coach Warner.
“When Coach Warner sat me down mid-way through my practice round, I was a little confused at first – I thought I was in trouble,” Caeden Laughed. “But it felt amazing. Coming in as a first-year golfer, I can’t wait to show what I can do.” While Caeden admits to some nerves, he sees the “next man up” mentality as a massive opportunity to prove his potential.
While the team got ready to head off to Vancouver, Coach Allen's advice is simple: “Don't worry about the talent that other schools bring, just focus on your own game because after all, golf is a sport where only you can dictate your end result, not your opponents.”
Whether it's a senior looking to score low or a rookie like Caeden finding his rhythm, the Brentwood golf team is ready to play smart, take their time on putts, and most importantly, not forget their clubs.
