Notes to Nucleotides: Building Biology Brick by Brick

This term in Anatomy & Physiology 12, students are getting hands-on with the molecular building blocks of life. From carbohydrates to lipids and nucleic acids to proteins, the class works to explore how these molecules interact and power the body’s essential processes. With a focus on biochemistry and metabolism, students are beginning to uncover the complex systems that keep our bodies functioning. The class lays a strong foundation for understanding human biology at its most fundamental level.

After weeks of detailed note-taking, we are now shifting into more interactive, hands-on learning. We’ve recently started applying our knowledge by using creative tools to reinforce complex concepts. Colouring sheets have significantly helped students visualize protein structures while also reflecting deeply on their functions. Maren S, Alex ‘25, shares that she “think[s] the sheets are really helpful so I can map out what we’ve been learning”.

Recently, the class moved outdoors to channel our crafting side. We were tasked with depicting the different structures a protein molecule undergoes using pipe cleaners and colourful beads. By building models of primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures, we were able to see how simple amino acid chains twist and fold into complex, functional shapes. Mr Miller, Anatomy teacher, says that these structures “helped us visualize the 3-dimensional structure of protein”. This hands-on activity not only strengthened our understanding, but Elena F, Hope ‘25 says that “It allowed the class to showcase their creativity and connect everything we’ve learned!”

As the unit continues, students will be delving deeper into more molecular things and adding a little bit of biochemistry. With a balance of theory and experiential learning, Anatomy & Physiology 12 is proving to be both challenging and engaging.
