As the sun starts to set earlier, and academics, arts and athletics seem to settle down a bit, students begin to enter their houses and unwind as school fades to a ‘tomorrow problem’ - but not for our esteemed Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) students!

Philosophy, Politics and Economics is a specialized course at Brentwood that occurs once a week on Wednesday night. The course outlines global issues and how to tackle them in all three aspects: philosophically, politically, and economically.

PPE is taught by Ms Legassicke who also teaches Law Studies 12, AP Psychology, and Model UN & Public Speaking. Ms Legassicke’s diverse background with the UN allows her to approach PPE with a realistic view while covering current events and teaching her students how to initiate real-life topics and give them the skills to resolve these issues.

The class is currently writing research papers examining if equitable access or intellectual property is more important in the field of pharmaceuticals. The research paper is part of a competition hosted by the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF) created by New York University. If our Brentwood entries are strong enough, they are in the running for a $10,000 prize! Although the assignment is a lot of  “Work, work, work” says Oliver H, Whittall ‘25, the challenge calls for in-depth research, quick thinking, but also offers the chance to learn about a very current issue countries are facing today.

PPE encourages elaborative thinkers and provides students with an opportunity to get a look into three different perspectives while viewing world issues. Despite the fact that the course calls for hard work and pushes students to learn more, Brynn W, Mackenzie ‘25 remarks “The work is very rewarding in the end”.

PPE is a strenuous course for those not interested in current events, but if you are, this course may just be it for you.
