Regatta Entrepreneurs

As Brentwood Regatta excitement encompassed the campus this past weekend, it wasn’t only the rowers who felt pangs of anxiety and stress. Each year, the Entrepreneurship 11 classes work towards one major goal: to create successful vendor stands on the plaza.

This year the booths (all choosing to sell food) enveloped the plaza courtyard with contrasting aromas: everything from Japanese style hot dogs, complete with seaweed toppings, to sweet and savory crepes, was sold. Although most students may not have found this an ideal way to spend their entire weekend, the satisfaction, as well as profit, gained by the end of the regatta easily made up for it.

Spearheaded by entrepreneurship teachers Mr. Flynn and Mr. Gage, students devoted their time to not only creating masterpieces of culinary delight, but also to learning about the fundamental aspects of business. Through purchases, profits, work shifts, comparing prices and advertising, students were given the opportunity to experience the complexity of running a small business.

Whatever stresses the sellers had, the consumers of the food didn’t seem to notice. Mesmerized by a food court that instantly appeared at the beginning of the regatta, the only affliction the spectators dealt with was whether they were passionate about perogies, or if perhaps a caramel covered apple was the snack they were yearning for. The impressive assemblage of décor, quality food, cheerful smiles of service, and mature presentation of the mini-businesses contributed greatly to the professional air and festive atmosphere of the Brentwood Regatta.

It is only upon reflection that the true value of things can be seen. With the entrepreneurship booths, students were able to create successful three day businesses and to sample if such a business might be a part of their life path. With the quality craftsmanship shown this past weekend, all of the Entrepreneurship 11 students have proven their potential.
