Saturday Classes?
There are many mixed opinions on campus surrounding the topic of Saturday classes. Some may say it’s bad, some may say it’s good, but in the end, it’s just rather peculiar to the average Joe.
A standard week in the western world consists of seven days with five of them being for work and two of them being for rest. Brentwood, as a community, has altered that model while adding another half day of work - and six afternoons of sport and arts.
As a student, your gut reaction is to obviously dislike the idea of adding another half day of classes to our full-time schedule. If however, we did have that extra day off like everyone else, our school wouldn’t have the same culture.
Weekend leave would be extremely common and those adventurous on-campus Saturday nights and Sundays wouldn’t be the same. If there are more kids taking that extra day off to go home (especially for boarders) there would be significantly fewer students on campus for those days off. Socially, Brentwood would be looked at just like any other boarding school if they took Saturday school out of the schedule. But, as it turns out, the extra half day of academics not only keeps students on campus for the weekend, it also allows the school to implement reading breaks monthly for students and staff - and we’re done classes Monday to Friday at 1:15 for a delicious lunch in Crooks Hall!
The Saturday academic classes are essentially used for students to stay on campus during the weekend to build a sturdy and positive culture for the Brentwood boarding experience. It also allows students and staff to enjoy a monthly long weekend or midterm break from school. A win-win.
Those three Saturday classes really aren’t that bad!
