The Brentwood Boys basketball program carries a legacy of excellence. This year, with big shoes to fill after losing many key players, the whole program has stepped up. The grind began long before the first whistle; through relentless first-term practices, the Senior Boys have met the expectation that they would perform well, which they have.

In December, the team headed to Vancouver to compete in the Tsumura Basketball Invitational. Lasting from December 3rd to the 6th, this tournament gathers top teams in the province from all four divisions, with a total of 32 teams. The boys played several admirable teams, including Steveston-London, Collingwood, Richmond, and Pacific Academy; they went 2-2, coming home with a good experience and start to their season.

After winter break is when things started to amp up. With more league games and tournaments, they have proven themselves to be a top contender on the Island and in the province.

Every year, the Senior Boys hold the Countdown to Playoffs tournament from January 29th to 31st. Hosting 16 teams, this tournament is a good test for every team. With three convincing wins against John Barsby, Belmont, and Edward Milne, the team secured a spot in the finals against a very good Lambirck Park squad. Most would say that this was a highly anticipated rematch between the two perennial powerhouses, but the team had yet to snag a win against Lamrick in the past two games. With a nail-biter of a game, and student fans cheering their loudest, the team pulled away, winning 82-77. MVP was awarded to Jackson L, Ellis ‘26, with Kang C, Whittall ‘26 and Jaxen L, Ellis ‘26, awarded tournament All-Stars.

Going into playoffs, where the stakes are higher, the boys have a tough road ahead of them. With league play in the rearview mirror, the team is full speed ahead to North Islands, February 11th to 14th, at Timberline, where they will have to face some challenging teams like Wellington and Isfeld. This will not be a walk in the parkas they hope to qualify for the Islands, which will be held at Brentwood from February 19th to 21st. The team will have to face familiar opponents to qualify for Provincials.

This is the final stretch on the road to Provies for our Senior Boys team, and for many of these players, it’s the culmination of years of dedication to this program. Wish them luck as they play for that title and leave it on the court one last time.
