With the long lived and successful Senior Boys Basketball season coming to an end, the only way to finish it off with style was here at home while we hosted the Island Championship.

The tournament was definitely much anticipated by high school basketball fans and Brentwood’s seniors as they weren't given this opportunity the past two years due to COVID-19 mitigation strategies which placed restrictions on sports events, sports attendance and the sports themselves.

The Island Championship was a battle for provincials; the first place team was given a berth to provincials while the third place team was able to challenge the second place team. Teams included in this tournament were Brentwood, Lambrick Park, Shawnigan Lake, St Andrew's, Gulf Islands, Highlands, and Kwalikum. The battle for victory was definitely intense. With Brentwood and Lambrick sitting at the top of the food chain, it came down to the remaining teams to finish up business.

Brentwood was quickly able to defeat their first few opponents. As the week went on, the boys continued to keep their bodies healthy and in shape by stretching, icing, and eating proper food to fuel their bodies. After their semifinal win, they progressed to play Lambrick here at home in Brentwood’s annual Showcase game which took place on Saturday, February 26. Leading scorer, Dylan G, Whittall ‘23 said that he wouldn't be “planning on dunking this weekend” as his leg “keeps giving out”. Philip A, Rogers ‘22, however, is adamant that he will “griddy and throw down on some bum” sometime in the tournament.

Unfortunately, the senior boys lost in the finals to Lambrick in a close, hard-fought game which definitely had an impact on the player’s emotion that night. The game was not what Brentwood or the team was expecting or wanted but nonetheless they continued to battle hard and redeem themselves on Tuesday March 1, with a win over St. Andrew’s which clinched them a spot at provincials.

The boys head to Langley on Tuesday to begin the big dance.
