Senior Boys Soccer '23
The fight to Provincials did not start when we placed first at North Islands. It did not start when we blew Shawnigan out of the water 4-0 in our fourth league game. It did not start when we were stepping onto the field at ISAs. It started on the first day of sport when we all came together as a team, unknowing of the challenges we would face and overcome.
Our league games throughout the season showed the unmatched team dynamic we had. Muddy pitches, and 50 mph winds were nothing against the team. As soon as Sam B scored a goal against the opposing team, they knew it was over. We had an undefeated league season.
At North Islands with the sun shining down, and the support of the school from the sidelines, we were truly unmatched: winning every game by three or more goals. In our final match against Gulf Islands, we were down 1-0 heading into the second half. Tensions were high, and Julian B pulled through with a hat trick to close the game. This was the first time Brentwood had taken home the North Island Gold in over eight years.
Going into Islands we had the right mindset. We were walking onto every pitch knowing we could win, and that showed as we dominated the first day; winning 3-2 against Stelly’s, and 3-1 against Wellington. On the second day, and little did the Grade 12s know, the last day, we started it off with a disappointing loss to St. Andrews which led us to our last game against SMUS. With ten corner kicks in the last five minutes of overtime, we were not able to put it in the net, so with the score at 2-2, we went to penalty shootouts. With a 4-5 loss in penalties, Brentwood fought hard to the last second of play. Walking off that field it was evident how far this team had come since walking on the field for the first time at ISAs. We had just been players making up a team, but leaving we were a family saying goodbye. Our spirit and enthusiasm for the game of soccer will live on. I am so proud of the boys and what our team was able to accomplish this year.
