Snow Place Like Winterlude

As Jack Frost remains a daily visitor to Mill Bay, it is time to embrace the cozy chaos of winter! As a result last week students were filled with anticipation as they awaited Brentwood’s annual snow trip, Winterlude.

This day marks a major highlight of the year as laughter lingers, friendships grow, and unforgettable memories are made on the slopes. Once a year, students have the privilege of venturing to the hills of Mount Washington - the nearest ski destination on the Island. At the mountain, they had the opportunity to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, cross-country ski, and tube; there is a thrilling experience for everyone! There is also the option of taking lessons that will teach you the basics of riding.

Students were especially excited because Winterlude was cancelled last year due to a snow shortage. Cleo K, Allard ‘25 shares: “I was so happy to hear it was happening this year because I couldn’t wait to go up one more time with my graduating class”.

While there are weekly trips to Mount Washington to hit the powder during second term - the Sunday Snow Bus - there is no better feeling than being there with the entire school. Siera E, Mackenzie ‘25 says that “It is so fun to see everyone having a good time off campus and away from the usual school routine”. This marks a day when everyone can enjoy the winter wonderland that Vancouver Island has to offer.

Eager students boarded their assigned buses - as early as 5:55am. The  excitement was palpable, as if they were adventurers seeking a new land ready to embrace whatever the day - and the mountain - had in store. Mr Smith, Assistant Houseparent of Allard says that “Winterlude was a great opportunity to get the whole school to do something different. It was good to see some shredders, some not so shredders, and those in between”.

Winterlude may only come once a year, but its impact lasts long after the snow has melted!
