Steve and Eugene: Chapter 2
Steve gave a long, frustrated sigh, “What is it now Eugene?”
Eugene folded the map back up slowly and carefully. The crinkling of paper filled the elongated silence. “This highway was discontinued in 1963” Eugene warily explained.
“What do you mean it was discontinued in 1963? It is right under our wheels and in perfect repair. You must have read the map wrong” retorted Steve in a righteous tone. With his famed reflexes he snatched the folded map off of Eugene’s lap and hurriedly spread it out in front of him. Eugene was, in fact, correct. In bold black letters spread across their road: Discontinued, 1963. “You see” Eugene leaned over to point at the hindrance to their journey “I wasn’t reading it wrong”. Steve lifted his head from the paper terror to look around at the surroundings he had previously ignored. Strange tropical plants lined the suddenly transformed road. The once intact tarmac was crumbling and the previously bold yellow line was non-existent. To his left, a looming grove of twisting, dense trees hid the bodies of several sets of luminous eyes. Steve’s heart was racing. During his surveying of the area, he had tossed the now crumpled map back onto Eugene’s lap. Feeling a knot of dread expanding in his stomach, Steve turned to suggest they turn around when he heard a loud popping followed by dense smoke in the seat next to him. “Eugene!” Steve yelled with a mixture of surprise and fear.
As the smoke cleared, a map was all that was left on the seat that had so recently been occupied by Eugene.
