The 2024 Rowing Debut: Elk Lake Regatta

27 March 2024

Through the weekend of March 2-3, the Brentwood Rowers took part in the annual Elk Lake Regatta in Victoria. As the first regatta of the season after a challenging off-season training regime in the winter, the rowers eagerly awaited this weekend. “This regatta not only signifies the hard work our rowers have put in, it also signifies the transition into term three and regatta season”, said Florence T, Hope ‘24.

With the entire club coming together to represent the Brentwood “B”, it opened up a collaborative effort that each rower fostered. Chloe D, Alex ‘26, of the Junior Women spoke about the team’s work ethic: “It was incredible to see the dedication that each of my teammates showcased this weekend. Watching everyone work together made me realize how collaborating with my teammates is the most important part of this sport.”

The Junior Girls competed well, placing first in the U17 Women’s 8+. This was incredible to watch as it was some of these athletes' first race ever, and they still took home Gold. The U19 Men’s 8+ and 4+ also took home gold after an incredible showcase of their work ethic. Peter D, Privett ‘25 dubbed it one of “The best races this crew has ever had”. Alongside the senior men, the Junior Men also had a great showcase at this regatta. “The results were not as expected; however it was some of these boys' first time competing making it a special memory no matter what” said Joel K, Ellis ‘26. They took home 5th place in the U17 Men’s 4x+, with a time of 8:37.8.

The Senior Women’s U19 8+ had a mentally tough race, however they still managed to get second place. “The crew was disappointed in how we placed, however this is a wake-up call for the next regatta and makes us even hungrier for the top spot” says Stroke Seat Novella R, Hope ‘25. Although this race was challenging, the team’s support was an incredible event to witness, relating back to the fundamentals of the Brentwood family - andlet;’s not forget they won the 4+. “Watching this crew support each other through ups and downs makes all the hours worth it”, says Ms Spencer Manton, Assistant Head of Rowing Coach. This was a tremendous effort that was put in for the next step to success.

I would like to thank the coaches of each program and our boathouse manager, Mr Stephen Ross, for letting us compete in this regatta.
