The Ellis House Report

20 July 2023
Oscar Long, House Captain, Ellis ‘23
The boys of Ellis have, yet again, had an outstanding year. Almost half the house was new in September, but they quickly settled in. They joined a family led by the duo of Mr Barrett and Mr Wismer, a family that I am so grateful to have been a part of for an amazing four years. The boys were welcomed with the classic trio of speed dating on the turf, barefoot soccer, and the always-memorable “Fun & Games”.

It didn’t take long before I realized that every grade brought something special. Although the 9s are always pushing it on their bedtimes, they bring a youthful energy that makes it hard to stay mad. Despite their rowdiness, you can always count on a good laugh from the 10s. Although sometimes it seems the 11s compete to annoy Prefects, they are a great group who will do a splendid job leading the house next year, and, of course, the 12s were doing their best to keep the ship afloat.

Despite the outstanding effort made by the boys, the house would simply falter without the incredible guidance from our house staff. Thank you Mr Cowie - the Ellis lads can always count on a laugh from you on Monday nights. Thank you Mr Skardal for keeping us focused and helping us reach the finish line. Thank you Ms Balbiani, you have truly cemented yourself as the Ellis House mom. Thank you, Mr Luna, for your sagacious presence and your incredible patience. Thank you both Mr Hepburn and Dr Roeth for your commitment to creating a fun and friendly environment for the boys. And finally, thank you Mr Wismer and Mr Barrett; the house would be in shambles without the two of you running the show.

Ellis is more than just a boarding house - it is a brotherhood. I will dearly miss the late-night chats, the in-house breakfasts, always-entertaining Big Bros nights, Saturday burgers, House outings, and Interhouse events, regardless of the result. Ellis has come to mean so much to so many people, me included, and I thank all of you for making this year so memorable. I will miss all of you, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Ellis House, Best House.
