“‘Legacy’ is a word that has been used as a theme for several years of the spring exhibitions at Brentwood because it is versatile and appropriate. Versatile because of the aspects of the school’s character it represents: formally, as a tradition to be passed down, a gift consciously bestowed.”

These were the opening lines to Brentwood’s Art Show.

Within the halls of the Arts building, dozens of pieces were on display that showcased the talent of numerous students. From 3D pottery to photography, various themes were conveyed through the use of texture, colour, and shape.

Jordyn R, Alex ‘24 created a piece called “Transparency” which is a shear corset overlay of body paint and sculpted teeth. The piece speaks volumes. Jordyn's intentions when creating this were for it to be “a homage to traditional corsets at the dangerous faze in fashion, however looking through history and past the initial fear of supremacy, we find a comforting, functional piece of clothing. We are all led to believe the feeling of danger keeps us safe but the gut feeling of danger is often caused by ignorance of a problem. Lack of self-awareness and proper understanding can lead to eating yourself up inside. This piece … is designed to be bold and unsettling just like the truth about how the only one against you is yourself.”

Some students entered several pieces of work into the exhibition that told a story. Khloe B, Mack ‘24 constructed three paintings that all complimented one another and these were titled “Do you think we are soulmates in every universe”. Khloe describes her work and states “Every picture depicts the reincarnation of the same women, and they find each other and fall in love again in every reincarnation because they are soulmates. It's done in watercolour with lots of layering. The style is meant to have a fairytale storybook kind of vibe because they are fairytales. The first one is a woman and a mermaid. The second is a woman and a harpy. The third is a woman and a forest spirit. The mythological woman is the same woman every time, and the human woman is the same every time. “

Bringing in content from her March Break service trip to Eswatini, Mea T, Hope ‘24 captured a picture of an African leopard in Kruger National Park. This shot was taken while her group was following the leopard as she was hunting her prey. Mea said “It was an unreal experience and I was so grateful that we got so lucky on the safaris seeing such amazing animals”.

Students exhibiting their artwork during the Brentwood Regatta is a splendid way to share unique pieces with members outside of the community and bring together people in an unparalleled manner. Guests are able to explore another side of Brentwood’s offerings through forms of expressions that convey a myriad of emotions.
