The Power of Probability: Brentwood introduces Statistics 12
In a world increasingly driven by data, the ability to interpret numbers is no longer optional — it’s mandatory. Recognizing this, Brentwood has introduced Statistics 12, a new course designed to equip students with the tools for understanding the real world. Under the guidance of the wonderful Ms Wolinsky, we are learning to see beyond the surface of raw numbers, transforming from passive consumers of information into confident, critical thinkers.
The new course is already proving to be a highly engaging and valuable addition to the curriculum. Students quickly dove into the foundational language of statistics, exploring concepts like interquartile range, standard deviation, and advanced methods for analyzing data from graphs. For ambitious students seeking a further challenge, the course includes preparation for the optional AP Statistics exam.
“Stats is probably my favourite class right now,” mentions Jonathan Y, Rogers ‘27. “Despite only being one month in, I’ve learned so much and the classroom atmosphere is awesome.”
The course’s key emphasis is its real-world application, showing students how to use statistical tools to analyze a wide variety of data — a skill critical for fields ranging from business and finance to social science and research.
Students are also discovering the depth beneath what they once thought were simple concepts. “Before this course, I thought I already knew the basics of statistics, but thanks to Ms Wolinsky, I realised mean and median are so much more than just numbers and can be used to analyze such a wide variety of data,” Joel K, Ellis ‘26 conveys. Moving forward, the class will be exploring more complex concepts, including two variable data analysis.
“We kept getting grads coming back and saying that they wished they got some stats in high school, since so many post-secondary programs -- including the social sciences like psychology and anthropology – require stats courses.” Ms Wolinsky explains. “I can’t remember why I suddenly decided last year that the time was nigh to put in the proposal, but I’m glad I did! I’d say it’s off to a great start!”
As student interest grows, the future of quantitative literacy at Brentwood looks brighter than ever. This year's Statistics 12 class is not just learning a subject; they’re writing the first lines of a bold new chapter in Brentwood’s pursuit of practical, modern academic excellence.
A huge thank you goes to Ms Wolinsky and Brentwood for introducing this course to us. As someone who plans on studying business, statistics has always been an interest for me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to gain this crucial foundation.
To Ms Wolinsky: Thank you for always coming to class full of energy and enthusiasm, ensuring we are not only understanding concepts well but also looking out for us outside of the classroom. I look forward to spending the rest of the year with you and becoming a better analyst by the end of the year.
