The Season of Study

27 November 2011
Taryn O
It’s still November but already the campus has begun to glow at night with Christmas lights; there are illuminated trees and some houses have already been decorated. The joviality of the Christmas season is in the air, but there’s something amiss: the feeling of the season has not entirely gripped the students of Brentwood. They are preoccupied. Merchants may have been celebrating the holiday season as early as the 1st of November, but here in Mill  Bay there’s something much more than the time of good ‘ol St. Nick: it’s exam season.

In a short (very short!) fortnight, students will sit down to write their December exams. These daunting papers have been creeping into the minds of seniors and juniors alike as they, like time and tide, have inched closer and closer. What was once a trivial mention - a bridge to be crossed when it came about - is now a cause for immediate study.

During the next few weeks, the library will begin to overflow with teenagers eager to pass their exams. Grade 12s prepare to take what they perceive as some of the most important tests they will ever write, and new students brace themselves for their first Brentwood examinations.

Many things are different while doing December exams here at Brentwood: who ever heard of doing an exam in uniform? And starting at nine am, well that’s just too early for brains to work properly.

Now there are review sheets being handed out in classes, and practice questions begin to fill up binders. Soon enough desks will be as messy and jumbled as the thoughts of these diligent academics.

The glimmer of light at the end of this tunnel? Christmas Break of course. Three weeks of bliss: no homework, no sign-ins, and no bedtimes. Scholars push through their workload, balance it with exam studying, and still manage to dream of the 15th of December, when they are free to load onto a plane, a ferry, or into a car, and make their way to their comfy beds at home.

The reality and proximity of December exams did not seem real until this past Monday when advisors revealed the exam schedule and study tables were passed out. Students were encouraged to begin their studying as cramming is frowned upon as an inadequate form of preparation, with teachers claiming that you will not remember nearly as much.

A word to the wise: don’t stress out too much. While these exams may be inevitable, that doesn’t mean that your losing sleep is as well. Plan out your study time, and make sure to leave some time for fun as well. All work and no play makes Jack a dull (and stressed) boy. Take advantage of the schedules that have been handed out specifically to help you, and take a second to relax, listen to some Christmas music, and just breathe.
