The Whittall Boys Are Back In Town
Three weeks have passed since the new Whittall boys first stepped foot on this vibrant, lively campus and the returning students were thrilled to introduce themselves to the new guys. September has been, predictably, a raucous and busy month. We here in Whittall House wouldn’t have it any other way.
The school year has officially begun, and the tone in Whittall House is starting to get serious. In our house meeting, our beloved Houseparent, Mr Gage, shares his famous saying: “You mess with a bull. You get the horn”. With a packed schedule of academics, athletics, and arts all on full throttle, the boys have no time to waste during the precious two hours of prep time we get each night.
As my fellow Grade 12s and I enter the busy first term, it is evident that, collectively, we are feeling the inevitable pressure of imminent graduation. Not only are we responsible for House Prefect roles to keep the house intact, we also need to balance the workload from our classes and to thoroughly consider post-secondary options; many of us are in the process of doing rigorous work right now to complete university applications.
Academics aside, Whittall House and our wonderful companion, Alexandra House, celebrated a huge victory at the first Interhouse event, the Eco-Challenge. Interhouse is a year-long event consisting of a series of competitions organized by the hardworking SAC team. The four competitive houses compete throughout all three terms, in hopes of raising the trophy in June.
Last week, Whittall/Alex did just what it takes to be the top contender for the year. The girls and the guys showed great spirit, working collaboratively to efficiently complete a series of races: sea kayaking, a lap around campus, portage, and much more. Kaelin D, Whittall ‘23 was our vigorous runner for the portage. After the well-deserved victory, he shared a couple of words reflecting on the event: “It feels wild that this is our last Eco-Challenge, ever. I’m glad I took on this challenge!” We are looking forward to many more upcoming Interhouse events to compete for the #1 position at the end of the school year.
