Top-Notch TED Talks
Every October, Brentwood hosts the traditional TEDx talks, and this year marked the tenth anniversary! Passionate speakers came to Brentwood from a variety of communities to share their meaningful ideas and powerful beliefs.
The incredible lineup consisted of nine speakers, four of which were student speakers: Lauren C, Mackenzie ‘24, Dara M, Alex ‘25, Zheng Y, Privett ‘24 and Karis M, Allard ‘24. Additionally, the faculty members Ms Wolinsky and Mr Luna spoke. They spoke insightfully about topics as diverse as climate optimism, music, athletics, living in the moment, the nature of beauty, and the world wide web.
Giving a TED talk in front of hundreds of people, especially your peers and teachers, is no walk in the park, but Karis observed “I enjoy using my voice to share my ideas.”
Her process of writing a TED talk entailed thinking of an idea, talking through the content of the idea, choosing the talking points and researching them, and, lastly, practicing lots and editing as you go. While it is a rigorous process, she was able to learn that she was more capable of writing and performing one than she thought. Her confidence grew and, after she sorted out all the moving puzzle pieces, “Everything clicked!” Karis reflected.
This incredible event runs as a team effort, with the help of staff organizers, the theater production team, the livestream team, student volunteers, and Mr McPherson, who is the staff coordinator.
These TED talks are an opportunity for the Brentwood community to foster conversation and encourage inquisitiveness. The range of speakers allows for the diverse audience to take away some thought-provoking ideas, and, perhaps, kindle an interest in a newly discovered topic.
Mr McPherson believes that “TEDxBrentwood is a great encapsulation of what we try to accomplish at the School. It creates an opportunity to be curious, thoughtful, supportive, and most of all, open to exploring new ideas.”
