Winter Coxswain Camp

10 January 2012

On December18th I headed to San Diego where I was a participant at the Sparks Consulting Winter Coxswain Camp. They have hosted a couple of summer camps, but this was the first winter camp: we were the “guinea pigs”. I was only there for four days, but it was intense and right to the point. We rowed out of the University of California at San Diego boathouse three times a day. There were 50 people attending the camp and nine of us were coxswains. Everyone was American and most were from boarding schools on the East Coast. I was the only person who rows in Canada and the only one from the Northwest.
The coaches were U.S. Junior National team coaches and though one of the coaches, Christina Meyer, interned at Brentwood in 2002-03, they brought a different style of coaching than I was used to. Although my coaches at Brentwood have prepared me for this camp, I still learned tips I look forward to sharing with my team. The camp also gave me a greater appreciation for Brentwood’s boat house, equipment and rowing staff.
Even though the camp took up my vacation time, I think it was a great opportunity to get as much training and experience as I can before we begin the regatta season in the spring.
