A 50-50 Exhibition

Before we even made it out of the bus, it was evident that it was already a successful evening. Through the windows of the Fifty-Fifty Arts Collective in Victoria, we could see Jonathan CH, Ellis ’13 looking quite happy amid a bunch of people viewing the exhibition of his art. The conventional method of hanging canvases on the wall, understandably, did not do justice to Jonathan's “Sal Paradise” series, which he displayed free standing on stilts. An obvious highlight was the window corner in which several paintings standing at different heights were clustered in a way that intrigued every visitor.

The atmosphere was great and you could see everyone enjoying themselves. The stream of visitors included University of Victoria arts students who took notes and, much to Nurse Decker’s joy, discussed all of the works. Other art goers included our gaggle of Brentwood students (who were even more excited about the show than the food provided which says a lot) and staff as well as 2012 Brentwood grad Rosalind Jay. Former Brentwood sculpture teacher Mr. John Boehme arrived, bringing with him The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s Director, John Tupper, as well as its new Chief Curator, Michelle Jacques.

The speech Jonathan gave to his audience gave great insight into the meaning of the political and psychological aspects of his work. In an interview with Efren Quiroz, of Exhibit-V (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObFYAR9H9nI) Jonathan explained some of the questions that drive his interest in making art:

"The possibility of representing both the things that are there, as well as the things that are intangible, the things that exist but they exist in sort of an illusory way. They don't exist in the way that a piece of wood exists or a piece of metal exists….they exist sort of beyond that, and I'm interested. And that motivates me to make works that aren't as simple as just a square with paint on it. The work relates to the space around it…and I think that’s very important to me."

Thanks, Jonathan for such an impressive exhibit. See you back in the studio in January.
