A BUNCH OF FUN
Mrs. Quinton, Brentwood’s theatre teacher, is delighted how much her students have been fooling around this year. As a matter a fact, they are taking nothing seriously.
The laughter during rehearsals has been non-stop but the cast of 13 Senior Acting students will be ready for opening night of Carlo Goldoni’s outrageous comedy, The Servant of Two Masters (Apr 20-23) in the T. Gil Bunch Centre for the Performing Arts. This very amusing and cheeky script is full of double entendres, sight gags, disguises, chases, sword play, juggling, singing, and dancing. It is physically demanding but very fun.
The plot follows Truffaldino, played by Michael G, Privett ‘17 a buffoonish servant attempting to juggle duties of serving two masters, played by Katherine B and Muhammad K, without them discovering he is moonlighting. Truffaldino dodges his masters in the crazy streets of 18th century Venice full of young lovers, cross-dressers, and jealous rivals. The Brentwood production incorporates the stylistic elements of Commedia dell”arte: clowns, music, improv, dance, acrobatic action, and physical playfulness. This new adaptation of the play maintains the traditional stock characters - Pantalone, the miserly merchant; Smeraldina, the outspoken maid; Dr. Lombardi, the gas-bag academic; the zany servant, Truffaldino, but will also incorporate current pop culture, improvisations and modern gags. It’s fun for all ages!
