On Friday September 28th, both Mr. MacLean’s and Mr. Luna’s art history classes set off to Vancouver to discuss architecture and to see the Matisse exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The ferry ride consisted of reading about the artists and discussing what we were going to see. Upon arrival in the city, it was clear that while many people were tired from the early morning start, they still had a lot of energy to walk around the city. Being out of Mill Bay is always exciting, so students were definitely eager to explore the city and discuss architecture.

Mr. MacLean’s passion for architecture really came out on this trip: his energy definitely kept the group excited and enthused. We visited churches and monuments, several commemorating World War 1. Leading up to the Matisse exhibit, we sketched some of Vancouver’s most famous monuments and buildings. While waking up earlier than a regular school day was a challenge at first, once we got outside everyone was eager to explore the city. It was definitely beneficial to wake up early because it was essentially empty - as Mr. Maclean said: “The city is ours.”

After a quick stop for breakfast, students gathered in the world famous Vancouver Art Gallery to experience the Matisse exhibit as well as explore the other levels featuring modern art. After a quick lecture from Mr. Luna, we were set free to stroll through the exhibit at their leisure. The paintings were from the Cone sister’s private collection and showcased several of Matisse’s finer works including the infamous “Pink Nude” for which he did several studies. Other artists featured in the gallery were Van Gogh, Delacroix, Picasso and Gaugin. Needless to say the exhibit had an excellent selection of pieces of art that were truly beautiful to see first hand in a gallery setting. After the exhibit, we packed our bags and bid farewell to the city and headed back to Mill Bay, feeling enriched and inspired by our outing to the city.

A huge thank you is in order for Mr. Luna, Mr. MacLean and Ms. McCallum for coordinating and supervising the trip.
