Brentwood’s Spelling Bee: A Hive of Activity
Brentwood’s Interhouse Spelling Bee drew a lively crowd this Friday night as multitudes of students poured into the Bunch to watch a dozen brave souls compete at an academic skill that is in high demand in the global workforce: spelling words out loud. Revelers in the audience buzzed with anticipation. Mrs. Reynolds was our distinguished judge, and Alex and Georgia were our excellent (mis)pronouncers.
The spellers slugged it out in gladiatorial fashion. Banners were raised and war cries pierced the air. Some spelling skirmishes lasted as long as epics, others as long as haikus. When the dust settled, four heroic students brought home victory for their houses and earned the adulation of their peers. Eight of us were shamed by the discordant peal of the cowbell and bestowed with a bittersweet consolation box of smarties.
Congratulations to Varshabh (Grade 9) of Whittall House, Olamide (Grade 10) of Privett, Dina (Grade 11) of Allard, and Brooke (Grade 12) of Alex for their triumphs. The spellers of today are the leaders of tomorrow.
Thanks to all 16 brave spellers, to Mr Armitage’s amazing crew, to Mrs. Reynolds’ thuggish security detail, and to the audience!
