Cheerful Children at Bench
Every Monday is a special day for the Grade 10 Children’s Literature elective and all of their cute, little kindergarten buddies at Bench Elementary School.
In May, Grade 10 English students select one of seven genres that explore all aspects of English. This is worth 10% of their overall English mark at the end of the year. We are currently writing this article as part of the Photojournalism elective with Mr. Ganley.
In the Children’s Literature elective each student is paired up with one kindergarten student in Mrs. Wardle’s class at Bench Elementary. Before they are paired up, both take a personality quiz to see who would be most compatible.
Brentwood’s Mrs. Hedquist and Bench’s Mrs. Wardle have been doing this for the past three years. It all started when Mrs. Hedquist’s daughter was in kindergarten, and Mrs. Hedquist thought it would be a great idea for her Grade 10 genre class to write a children’s book based on the personalities and interests of their “little buddies.” It is always a popular elective choice and a wonderful experience for both the Grade 10s and their little buddies.
There were a lot of positive comments and giggly smiling faces as we went around and asked the students what they thought about how they spent their Monday mornings. “Monday is now my favorite day of the week” said sweet Sienna L, Kasane E’s little buddy. “I love when I see my big buddy and we play soccer outside” stated Jordan W. Mrs. Wardle said that the little guys just love the one-on-one attention and someone to play with.
On June 3rd the little buddies will receive the individualized books that the Brentwood students have completed for them which match their personalities with creative text and pictures that the little buddies have drawn.
Mrs. Wardle and Mrs. Hedquist observed that the final Monday, after the big buddies have read their stories to their lucky little buddies, many tears fall and hearts are pulled when it comes to the goodbyes. Even though each pair had only spent a few weeks together, friendships are formed and memories are made.
This is the most touching day. These students will never forget their best buddy.
