Glitz, Glamour, and Love at Spring Formal
Not many people stop to give it a second thought, but Brentwood and Paris actually have many things in common. The crane building our new Centre for Innovation and Learning is our Eiffel Tower, McNeill’s a quaint Parisian café, and the waters of Mill Bay are most certainly a one-up on the Seine. With this frame of mind – and also likely because Paris is the city of love and glamour - it’s no wonder that this year’s Spring Formal theme was A Night in Paris.
After weeks of planning and romantic proposals, Brentwood’s Grade 11s and 12s flocked to Crooks Hall on the evening of Saturday, May 13, dressed in glittery gowns and tailored suits. Students and their dates entered the event on an elevated red carpet in McNeill’s and strutted down the runway as Ms Curtis snapped pictures, setting the extravagant tone for the night. “The fancy decorations, food, and activities made Spring Formal really great this year,” Kennedy H, Mack ’24 observed.
The chairs and tables had been cleared out of Crooks Hall, making room for a photo booth, a caricature artist, and of course, the dance floor. There was also a food table adorned with Parisian snacks such as macarons, crêpes, escargot, and cheese platters, showcasing our Food Services Staff’s ability to chef up delicious and accommodating treats. “I really enjoyed the gluten-free food options and the night in general,” remarked Emma W, Alex ‘23. “There was definitely ‘lots of love’ in the air!”
Many of the guests used the light from the setting sun as an opportunity to take photos outside on the balcony with their friends. As the light dimmed and the sky was ablaze with pink and purples, the seniors headed inside to the dance floor to get down to the music played by Mr Roth. Between dance circles and, of course, mosh pits, the students seemed to have lots of fun!
Ms Barnes commented on her perception of the night: “Watching the students enjoy an event which took weeks of planning by Ms Ramsay, me, and the Grad Council was heartwarming to see. The smiles, excitement and the gratitude students have makes events like this so worth it!”
Gratitude, like Ms Barnes said, is definitely owed to everyone who made this event possible. Thank you to Ms Ramsay and Ms Barnes for all of their work coordinating everything down to the very last detail and the student volunteers from Grad Council and SAC for their time spent behind the scenes setting up. Spring Formal is a lovely annual tradition for Brentwood seniors to dress up and celebrate a fun evening with friends before diving into finals and the last stretch of the school year!
