Hope House 2013-2014
The Grade 12s. Oh, the Grade 12s! Where to begin? With Claire, who made an indelible mark in just one year? With Hilary, who designed great house clothing but couldn’t use a shoe rack properly? With Rehana, whose bug zapper goes down in charades history? With Mack, our Assistant House Captain, whose energy lights up our house? Miranda, who epitomized “bustling”? With Danielle, who defined love with chicken? Chantei, liked by Diplo? Hye Young, our House Captain, who coxed Hope House happily through ten exciting months?
The 11s all learned something. Brynn learned about the midnight sun; Faryn learned that one night in pink-striped spandex is enough; Shesley learned to balance sophistication and goofiness; Cevina learned to make empanadas; Kimmi learned to speak her mind; Lucy learned – in May – that her bedtime was 10:15pm; Caleigh learned to wield a passive-aggressive pen & Post-It; Tessa learned to cut cake & stay uninjured for more than a week; Echo learned lots about Canada; Leah learned how to hone sarcasm; Cristina learned the ferry schedule the hard way; Jordan, Karli & Rachel learned to transform in the halls, from students into beautiful women.
Our 10s will soon take on the new girls’ residence. Cheung will run the kitchen & feed us gourmet Asian food; Jerome will sprint up stairs; LaFreniere will be trapped in her room by her shoe collection; Julie will cocoon herself on cold winter nights; Jennie will make us laugh; Sophia will still be an innocent-looking sassy pants; Sarah, Madelin & Allie will have a real day student room to call their own. Louise leaves us at the end of this year, but we wish to see her again.
It’s been a great year, thanks to a house full of the seemingly endless energy & compassion of our duty staff – Mrs. Martin, Ms. Steele-MacInnis, Ms. Mannion, & Ms. Sun. Holly kept our house clean & healthy, & Mrs. Amiel kept me sane; her two-year stint as Assistant Houseparent sets a Hope House record. Great year girls!
Mrs. Karen Hedquist, House Parent
