Junior Girls Soccer 2013

With the sun shining and soccer balls flying in every direction, the tryouts for third term sport began. Our dedicated coaches watched each pass, shot, and touch of the ball intently, eager to create a magnificent Junior Girls Soccer squad.  From the opening whistle to the final game of the season, our nemesis was Shawnigan Lake. Four games with them determined our fate. As our season progressed, our confidence as a team grew. Shawnigan's fate was not pretty; ours was to reach our goal  - after much team bonding via goal carrying - we made it to the Island Championship for the first time in four years. So many happy memories were made over this short period of time. We would like to say a huge thank you to our coaches, Mr. Collis and Mr. Kulai, on behalf of the whole team for their devotion and patience in putting up with our “Junior Girl Moments”. For example, during our first game, the referee was forced to pause play for one of our midfielders who had to shed layers upon pounds of her silver jewelry, earning her the name 'Bling' for the rest of the season. On the way to Kelsey one afternoon, a bee inside the bus startled one of our crazy Grade 9s: she let out a girlish shriek that frightened local wildlife.  The majority of our games were played in stylish attire: the whole team sported incomparable retro tablecloth jerseys that distracted our competitors, who were busy laughing.  But we Mid-Island Champions got the last laugh.  To end the season, the junior girls played the junior boys in a match that will never be forgotten; we won on penalty kicks by one shot. It was the first time that the girls had taken the victory since the tradition began about 5 years ago.  Above all, we learned Coach Taylor's great lesson: "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose."
