Vancouver Model UN
A fortnight ago a team of diplomats travelled to Vancouver to participate in the biggest high school Model UN Conference in Canada, VMUN. Our students competed with confidence, vigor, and style against almost 1100 other delegates and took part in committees like the World Health Organization, ECOSOC, the House of Commons, the Chinese Politburo, the Historical Crisis Committee and the prestigious Security Council. Members of the Brentwood delegation tackled issues such as malaria, Chinese overpopulation, the legalization of marijuana – headed by our own Kevin D as monsieur Justin Trudeau – and the historical Vietnam War. I am particularly proud of our diplomats from solving intense midnight crises (many involving nuclear war) warding off advances from members of the Columbian delegation ;-) and bringing the girls chocolate on Valentine’s Day.
After more than 24 almost consecutive hours of intense debate, crisis resolution, and negotiations, we were thrilled to sit back in our limousine on our way to the ferry. We were, however, all quite upset to be returning to the relative mundaneness of quotidian life. After being the head of a country, commanding armies, and saving the world from epidemics, it’s a bit disorienting to return to tray drop duty.
Thank you to the delegates for making my last conference so memorable, and a huge thank you to Mr. Bryant and Ms Steele-MacInnis for their tireless effort in facilitating this experience.
Our delegates didn’t leave without souvenirs of their hard work – Zeeshan A and Ibrahim S won honourable mentions in the WHO committee and Kevin D won Best Researched for his work in the House of Commons. Out of almost 1100 delegates, these achievements are remarkable and quite disproportionate to the number of students we sent.
