Wednesday Morning 8:00 a.m.
Within the tangled string of events that is the busy Brentwood week lies a day of haven, a day of rest, the epitome of reward, lovingly placed in the centre of the week: Wednesday.
Teenagers need sleep. This is an inalienable fact proven by numerous studies and the consistent whining of exhausted teens endured by parents since the dawn of time. For Brentwood students, Wednesday provides a clear reward, affectionately given by the faculty in the form of an extra hour of sleep. Excitement begins on Tuesday evening as we eagerly await the prospect of not having to get up at the usual time, and enjoying that precious extra 60 minutes. When the first bell rings promptly at 8:00 a.m. the next morning, it is hoped that the students will be a little better rested, a little less irritable, and a little more ready to tackle the remainder of the week.
Unfortunately, not everyone is afforded this brief break from the terrors of a school-day morning. The paths traveled by the students and teachers rarely diverge, as we follow the same schedule of meals, classes, sports, arts and prep throughout the academic week. Unfortunately for the ever-committed faculty, Wednesday mornings provide little of the relaxation provided for the students for it is during first block on Wednesday (the students’ sleep in!) that the teachers convene for their weekly staff meeting. But despair not faculty! Be assured, you have our fullest thanks for completing this act of sacrifice so that we may sleep.
Like the weekend sleep-ins, Wednesdays continue with similar pleasures as students eagerly trek to Crooks Hall for the Brentwood-famous breakfast cakes. The sweet, fruity taste of a Brentwood breakfast cake is usually enough to brighten your day. Similarly, a shortened academic day of only four classes is a gift to both students and teachers alike. All of this adds up to a half-week reward, and at the end of a more relaxing day, students can re-enter the business of Brentwood renewed, at least until Thursday morning. ;-)
