Early Mornings Aren’t for Nothing
On early Wednesday mornings the rowers’ alarms go off; bright green numbers are flashing: 6:00am. They get up to brush their teeth, put on their unisuit, and throw a hoodie over top. Walking outside into the brisk early morning spring air, the rowers’ cheeks are hit with the nippy air. It’s 6:30 and they’re on their way down to the boathouse. They find their coxswain still trying to wake up while she waits for the boys. It’s time to stretch and get on the water now that everyone is here. The oars are on the docks and we are ready to go. “Hands on. Ready up. Up over heads, ready, up! And split! Walk it out straight; watch the riggers!” calls Emma H, Allard ‘18 the coxswain. They are now on the water , preparing for the races ahead of us. With two weeks of early morning rows and 3-6 days a week of training all year these crews were ready to scope out their competition at the Maple Bay Regatta. With the first race of the day at 9:06, they are prepped. With their coxswain yelling and their stroke seat Oliver W, Privett ‘18, screaming for the boys to hold their pressure, there was no chance of losing. After a long day, 1-3 races each, the Brentwood Junior Boys took home an impressive first place win in their eight as well as their coxed quad. To complete a successful weekend, Benett L, Privett ‘18 and Riley T, Rogers ‘18 got first place in their doubles race and Liam C, Rogers ‘18, and Luka E, Rogers ‘18 got third. After morning rows and last weekend’s results at the Maple Bay Regatta, the boys (and girl) are eager to compete at home: The Brentwood International Regatta April 29th-May 1st. Training will get harder and the morning rows will get earlier but, with this much commitment and time, Brentwood is bound to see great results. Emma H, Allard ‘18 and Benett L, Privett ‘18
