Applause for Ward Phillips

The following was delivered by Brentwood Board Chairman, Mr. Bruce Carlson, to the school at Assembly in early May in honour of Mr. Ward Phillips. Ward Phillips was basically all about the students. While he has been a key figure in the successful completion of Allard House, Hope House, Crooks Hall, and the Centre for The Arts & Humanities, as well as the refurbishment of Alex House, he also initiated and supported many smaller endeavours that most of us don’t know about. Ward was behind the movement to SMART Boards in all the classrooms, the redecorating of the Head’s study, the solar panels on the Visual Arts building, trees on Campbell Commons, paddle boards for outdoor education, the outdoor basketball court, and the big screen in Crooks Hall. If Ward thought it would benefit the students, he did it. Over and above this, he literally transformed the campus with a collection architecturally and functionally brilliant structures that will outlive all of us. And all of these structures were constructed, with Ward’s guidance, on time and under budget. As a final act of generosity, he has transferred his knowledge and experience to member of our staff, Tom Shadlock and Scott Murray. He will be greatly missed.
